So it’s the end of Kindergarten for my oldest son and boy has it been a whirlwind! I’m excited to be with him all day and not have to sign so much stuff and return library books and help with homework and maybe (big maybe) sleep past 6:30am! But, I will have my hands full with two rambunctious little boys 24/7!
Speaking of being busy, smoothies have really come in handy for that. I can make them as a snack or a dessert for me and my kids and I almost always have something decent on hand to throw in there.
This week I dreamed up this mint chocolate matcha smoothie, based on a seasonal one they’re serving at the cafe in my gym right now. I love this smoothie because it’s like a healthier version of mint chocolate chip ice-cream!
What is Matcha?
Matcha is a big thing in the healthy living community right now, and for good reason. It’s packed with antioxidants and helps speed up metabolism. It also aids in the detoxification process. Matcha is a version of Japanese green tea that is grown and processed in a unique way. Before it’s harvested it’s moved to shade for about three weeks which is said to increase the amount of amino acid it contains.
The Smoothie.
I use matcha green tea latte mix from Trader Joe’s for this recipe. It’s tasty mixed with hot water or iced too. It tastes very similar to a green tea latte from Starbucks so if you like those, you will love this drink mix. If you don’t have a Trader Joe’s nearby I’ve seen several versions at the grocery store and there’s always amazon.
This smoothie is simple to make and contains just five ingredients:
- bananas
- milk
- matcha green tea powder
- dark chocolate chips
- peppermint extract
All you have to do is add all the ingredients to your blender and blend until smooth. Both my kids really like this smoothie as they are both big mint chocolate fans and the taste of the green tea is not overwhelming. You could, however, add extra matcha powder if you want a stronger taste. Also, if you want your smoothie to have this pretty green color, add your chocolate chips at the end. That way they won’t start turning the smoothie brown while it’s all blending.
If you’ve never had matcha before I think a mint chocolate matcha smoothie is a great way to start! If you try it be sure to tag #allthekingsmorsels and @allthekingsmorsels on social media. I’d love to hear what you think!

Hello there, this looks wonderfully refreshing and the bonus is the fact it has antioxidants and helps speed up metabolism– I hate to say this but at 46 mine has gone to the dirt. I am really working on stubborn belly fat and jelly thighs…The joy of middle age isn’t very joyous Kristen lol.

Yet another reason to go to Trader Joes. Does the matcha latte powder have anything else in it besides matcha? I have straight matcha here and it is very bitter. I’d like to find one that is more palatable.
Kristen King says
Yes this one is sweetened. It’s super yummy but of course does contain sugar.

This recipe looks really good! Is there any caffeine n it? Would I be able to substitute the milk?
Kristen King says
Hi Karen. Thanks for checking out my recipe! The matcha powder does have caffeine and I think any type of milk would taste great. I love to use almond milk in smoothies. I think it adds a yummy flavor.
